What you'll need

Two safe objects of similar size for banging. One small graspable toy. Normal interaction setting — floor or lap.

How it works

  1. 1~120s

In the next 2 minutes, just listen. Talk to your child normally. Does your child make consonant sounds — 'm', 'b', 'd', 'n', 'p'? Is there any babbling — 'mama', 'baba', 'dada' (even without meaning)? Does your child babble while playing with objects independently? Tell me every sound you notice.

Watch for: Baby makes consonant sounds

  2. 2~30s

Hand your child a small object. Watch the grip carefully — does your child hold it in a full fist, or are the fingers more open, like a cup shape? Is the thumb NOT involved (ulnar palmar grasp) or IS the thumb wrapping around (radial palmar)? Also: hold out an object toward your child's open hand — does your child open the hand in anticipation of receiving it? Tell me the grip type and the anticipation.

Watch for: Baby grasps a small object

  3. 3~40s

Two last tests. Give your child two small objects — does your child bang them together? Does your child place the spoon or cup on the surface and make a banging or tapping action? Then: lay a toy slightly out of reach with a cloth or string attached. Does your child pull the string or cloth to bring the toy closer? Tell me both.

Watch for: Baby bangs one object with another
