Goodbye–Hello Buffer Plan
A practical transition-support routine that helps you plan extra time and use predictable steps when your child moves between settings or groups. Uses simple ‘buffer’ play, a tiny visual cue, and a calm rehearsal to reduce rush and support belonging.
What you'll need
Essentials
- a small 'transition object' your child can carry (small toy, keyring, scarf, or pebble)
- paper and a pen/crayon (to draw a simple 'Now → Next' picture)
- a timer (phone) OR your fingers for a countdown
Nice to have
- a photo of the next place/group or a familiar person there (phone or printed)
- a small snack/water (if appropriate) as a 'buffer' support
Movement level: low
What you'll do
The 4-step guide, with what to look for at each step, is for signed-in parents.
