How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by sitting comfortably with your child in front of the mirror. Say, 'Look, it's us!' and point to both of your reflections. Make a big, happy smile and see if your child smiles back.

  2. 2

Now let's explore different feelings. Make a sad face in the mirror and say, 'Oh, I feel sad.' Then make a happy face and say, 'Now I feel happy!' See if your child tries to copy you.

  3. 3

Now let's practice calming down. Take a deep breath in through your nose and blow it out slowly like you're blowing bubbles. Say, 'When I feel upset, I breathe slowly to feel better.' Encourage your child to try with you.

  4. 4

Let's put it all together. Say to your child, 'Sometimes we feel lots of feelings! Let's make a mad face... then take a big breath... and make a calm face.' Go through the sequence slowly.
