What you'll need
Bathroom or brushing area with toothbrushes and toothpaste ready. your child should be standing or on a step stool where they can see you and move their hips. Best done during regular toothbrushing time.
How it works

Start by showing your child the pattern. Say 'When I sing shake shake, we shake our hips!' Demonstrate shaking your hips side to side with a big smile. Then say 'When I say brush brush, we brush your teeth!' Gently brush their front teeth. Do this once through — shake shake, then brush brush. Does your child try to shake their hips when you say the words? Does they seem to understand there are two different actions?
Watch for: Toddler shows understanding of a simple two-step pattern by attempting the correct action for each verbal cue.

Now let's repeat the pattern a few times. Keep it fun and rhythmic — 'shake shake... brush brush... shake shake... brush brush.' Watch your child's face and body language. Does they stay engaged with the toothbrushing routine instead of resisting or getting distracted? Does they make eye contact or smile during the game?
Watch for: Toddler participates willingly in a daily routine (toothbrushing) when it is made playful and interactive.

For our last round, make it extra silly! Exaggerate your hip shakes, use a funny voice, or add a little spin after brushing. We're looking for signs that your child actually enjoys this healthy habit. Does they laugh, giggle, or squeal? Does they try to copy your silly moves or initiate more shaking?
Watch for: Toddler shows positive emotions (laughter, smiles) during a healthy habit activity, indicating enjoyment rather than mere compliance.
