What you'll need

During a diaper change, have wipes container within toddler's reach. Toddler can be lying down or standing, depending on your changing setup. Ensure toddler is calm and alert.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

As you get ready for the change, hold out the wipes container and say, 'your child, I need your help! Can you pull out a wipe for us?' Make it sound exciting and important. Watch their reaction. Does your child reach for the container? Does they seem interested in helping? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Toddler shows willingness to help with a simple task when invited.

  2. 2~30s

Now help your child get a grip on a wipe. You might need to loosen one first. Say, 'Pull it out!' Watch their fingers. Does your child use a pincer grasp (thumb and finger) or a whole-hand grab? Does they manage to extract the wipe, even with some struggle? Describe the motor effort.

Watch for: Toddler uses finger-thumb coordination to grasp and pull a wipe.

  3. 3~35s

After your child gets the wipe, praise them specifically: 'Thank you! You're such a good helper!' Then continue with the change. Notice their mood. Does your child stay engaged? Does they seem proud or happy? Does they try to help with another step, like handing you the diaper? Tell me about their emotional response and continued participation.

Watch for: Toddler shows positive engagement and willingness to continue helping during the routine.
