What you'll need
Two different pajama sets available. Child should be in a calm, alert state during bedtime routine. Parent positioned where child can see both options clearly. No other materials needed.
How it works
- 1~30s
Hold up both pajama sets where your child can see them clearly. Describe each one simply — maybe 'These have blue stripes' and 'These have red dinosaurs.' Offer them at the same time and say 'Which pajamas would you like to wear tonight?' Watch your child's reaction closely. Does they look back and forth between them? Does they reach for one or point? Tell me what you notice.
Watch for: Toddler shows intentional decision-making when presented with two clear options, demonstrating emerging autonomy.
- 2~35s
Now let's build on that choice. As your child looks at or holds the selected pajamas, describe them in a bit more detail. You might say 'You chose the dinosaur pajamas! Look at the green dinosaur right here' or 'The striped pajamas feel so soft.' Watch your child's reaction to your words. Does they look where you're pointing? Does they touch the feature you mentioned? Does they repeat any words?
Watch for: Toddler shows understanding of descriptive vocabulary by following gestures, touching mentioned features, or attempting to repeat words.
- 3~25s
Let's check your child's commitment to their choice. Hold up the other pajama set again and say 'Are you sure you want the dinosaur ones? Or would you like these stripes instead?' Watch carefully. Does your child reaffirm their original choice? Does they show any doubt or change their mind? This shows us how firmly they can express and maintain preferences.
Watch for: Toddler consistently expresses and maintains a preference when given opportunity to change mind, showing developing self-awareness.
