What you'll need
Toddler in bathtub with shampoo already in hair. Plastic cup within reach. Bath environment should be warm and safe. Parent positioned to assist but not take over.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start by showing your child how to pour water from the cup into the tub. Make it dramatic and fun — 'Look! Water goes splash!' Then say, 'Now we're going to pour water on your head to rinse the shampoo.' Hand your child the cup and help them fill it. Does they try to pour on their own? Does they show interest in taking the cup and attempting the action?
Watch for: Toddler shows interest in participating in self-care activity by attempting to pour water or handle the cup.
- 2~35s
Now give your child a clear two-step instruction: 'First, tip your head back. Then, pour the water on your hair.' You might count to three for timing. Watch how your child responds. Does they attempt to follow both steps? Does they need reminders or physical prompting?
Watch for: Toddler attempts to follow a two-step instruction related to the hair-rinsing sequence.
- 3~30s
As your child attempts to pour, watch their body coordination. Does they manage to hold the cup while tipping their head back? Does water mostly go on their hair, or is it splashing everywhere? Notice how they coordinates these movements — it's trickier than it looks!
Watch for: Toddler coordinates head positioning with arm/hand movement to pour water toward own head.
