Let's Clean Together

Parent invites toddler to help clean the high chair tray after a meal, turning a simple chore into a collaborative activity that develops gross motor skills, responsibility, and social cooperation. The agent coaches the parent to observe imitation, purposeful wiping motions, and engagement in shared tasks.

What you'll need

High chair with tray cleared of dishes after a meal. Have a clean, damp cloth ready. Toddler can be in the high chair or standing beside it. Ensure the environment is safe for wiping.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by telling your child, 'Let's clean your tray together!' Show them how you wipe the tray with the cloth using big, slow, circular motions. Make it look fun and purposeful. Then say, 'Your turn!' and hand the cloth to your child. Watch closely — does they try to copy your wiping motion? Even if it's just a swipe or a pat, that's the beginning of imitation. What do you see?

Watch for: Toddler attempts to imitate parent's wiping motion after watching the demonstration.

  2. 2~35s

Now encourage your child to keep wiping. Say, 'Let's get this spot!' and point to a specific area. Watch their arm movements — does they use purposeful, controlled motions? Are the wipes intentional, or more random? Notice if your child applies pressure, changes direction, or focuses on cleaning a particular area. Describe what you observe.

Watch for: Toddler uses controlled, purposeful wiping motions with the cloth, showing gross motor coordination.

  3. 3~40s

For the final part, make this truly collaborative. Say, 'I'll wipe this side, you wipe that side!' or take turns with the cloth. Watch your child's social engagement — does they seem to understand you're working together? Does they show pride or enjoyment in helping? Look for smiles, continued effort, or attempts to hand you the cloth. Tell me about their involvement.

Watch for: Toddler engages in the cleaning activity as a shared task, showing understanding of helping and cooperation.
