Diaper Change Connection

The agent coaches the parent to observe recognition responses, calming to familiar voice, positive reactions to loving gestures, and social smiling during this routine care moment.

What you'll need
Baby on changing table or mat, diaper supplies within reach. Best when baby is calm but alert — not overly tired or hungry. No additional materials needed.
How it works
- 1~25s
As you begin the diaper change, get close to your child's face — about 8-12 inches away — and make gentle eye contact. Use your warmest, most loving voice and say something like 'Hi sweet your child, it's time for a fresh diaper.' Watch their face closely. Does your child make eye contact back with you? Does they seem to recognize you and respond to your familiar voice? Tell me what you notice.
Watch for: Baby shows recognition of parent through eye contact, facial expression, or body response.
- 2~30s
Now continue with the diaper change while keeping your voice calm and familiar. Talk your child through what you're doing: 'Let's get you all clean and comfortable.' If your child was fussing or restless, does they calm down when hearing your voice? If they was already calm, does their body relax even more? Notice their breathing, muscle tension, and facial expression. How does your child respond to the sound of your voice during this care routine?
Watch for: Baby shows calming or relaxing response to parent's familiar voice during care routine.
- 3~35s
Now for some playful connection! While maintaining eye contact, stick out your tongue slowly and playfully. Wait a moment to see if your child responds. Then try opening your mouth wide in an 'O' shape or raising your eyebrows. These simple facial gestures are like a game for your child. Does they watch intently? Does they try to imitate any of your expressions? Most importantly, does your child smile or show positive engagement during this face-to-face play?
Watch for: Baby responds positively to parent's playful, loving facial gestures during interaction.
