What you'll need
Clear jar with lid, glow stick, glitter, scissors. Parent should handle cutting the glow stick. Workspace should be easy to clean (tray or mat recommended). Dim lighting helps set bedtime mood.
How it works
- 1~40s
First, let's invite your child to help with the glitter. Open the glitter container and show them how to sprinkle it into the jar. You might need to help by holding the jar steady. Watch how your child handles the glitter — does they use their whole hand or just fingers? Does they try to pinch small amounts between thumb and forefinger? Tell me what you notice about their grasp.
Watch for: Child uses raking motion with fingers to gather and move small objects like glitter.
- 2~30s
Now for the magical part — after you've carefully cut the glow stick and poured it into the jar, close the lid tightly. Hand the jar to your child and say 'Let's make it shine!' Encourage them to shake the jar. Watch how your child holds it — does they use two hands? Does they adjust their grip when shaking? Notice if they looks at the glitter moving inside while shaking.
Watch for: Child uses thumb and forefinger in a pincer-like grip to hold and manipulate the jar.
- 3~45s
Now turn off the lights and enjoy your creation together. Hold the glowing jar and talk about the stars or moon. Watch your child's reaction — does they reach for the jar? Try placing it on a bedside table and see if your child attempts to put it in a specific spot or 'tuck it in.' This gentle wind-down helps them associate the activity with calming bedtime routines.
Watch for: Child attempts to place or insert the nightlight jar into a designated space.
