What you'll need
Toddler seated securely at a table or in high chair. Baked apple pieces (cooled) on one plate, crushed graham crackers in a shallow bowl. Parent should be nearby for supervision. Ensure apple pieces are soft enough for toddler to spear easily.
How it works
- 1~40s
Let's start by showing your child how to spear an apple piece. Use a child-safe fork or toothpick if you have one, or just demonstrate with your fingers. Say, 'Watch me pick up this apple cube!' Then hand your child the utensil or encourage them to use their fingers. Watch closely — does your child successfully spear or pick up an apple piece? Notice the precision of their grip and how steady their hand is.
Watch for: Toddler uses precise finger grip or utensil to successfully pick up a small apple piece.
- 2~45s
Now show your child how to dip the apple piece into the graham cracker crumbs. Say, 'Let's cover it in crunchy crumbs!' Watch as they tries to coordinate — holding the apple steady while moving it to the bowl, then dipping and turning to coat all sides. Does your child manage to coat the apple? Notice if their movements are smooth or jerky, and if they looks at the bowl while dipping.
Watch for: Toddler coordinates hand movements with visual guidance to successfully dip apple into crumb bowl.
- 3~50s
For our last step, encourage your child to complete the whole sequence independently: pick up apple, dip in crumbs, and eat it! Step back a little and see if they can manage the process without your direct help. Does your child remember all the steps? Does they show pride in their creation? Watch for signs of independence and enjoyment in making their own snack.
Watch for: Toddler completes multiple snack-making steps independently with minimal adult assistance.
