Grasp & Sprinkle

Parent prepares banana pieces with cinnamon for child to sprinkle, observing grasp patterns and fine motor development. The agent coaches the parent to notice raking grasp, pincer grasp attempts, and finger feeding skills while fostering positive associations with healthy foods.

What you'll need

Half banana baked or ripe, cooled and cut into bite-sized pieces. Small amount of cinnamon in a shallow dish or parent's hand. Child seated securely in high chair or at table. Ensure child is alert and not overly hungry.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Place a few banana pieces on your child's tray or plate. Watch how they picks them up. Does your child use their whole hand to grab the piece, or does they try to use just their fingers? Notice if they uses a raking motion with all fingers together, or if they starts to isolate their thumb and forefinger. Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Child uses a raking grasp — dragging objects into palm using all fingers together.

  2. 2~40s

Now put a small pinch of cinnamon in your palm and show your child how to sprinkle it on the banana. Say 'Look, we sprinkle!' and demonstrate with your fingers. Then offer your hand so your child can try. Watch closely — does they try to pick up the cinnamon with thumb and forefinger? Or does they use multiple fingers? The tiny grains really encourage that precise pincer grasp.

Watch for: Child attempts to pick up small cinnamon grains using thumb and forefinger tip-to-tip.

  3. 3~35s

Now let's see if your child connects the activity to eating. After sprinkling, does they pick up a banana piece and bring it to their mouth? Watch how they holds it on the way — does they maintain their grasp, or does the piece drop? Also notice if your child seems interested in tasting their creation. This is where fine motor meets healthy habits!

Watch for: Child picks up food with fingers and successfully brings it to mouth to eat.
