What you'll need
Toddler standing on a non-slip surface with parent nearby. Room should be dimly lit with minimal distractions. Best done 15-30 minutes before bedtime. No materials needed.
How it works
- 1~30s
Let's start with Mountain Pose. Have your child stand with their feet about hip-width apart, just like you're doing. Now gently guide them to bring their palms together in front of their chest — you do it too so they can copy you. Watch how your child responds. Does they try to bring their hands together? Does they look at your hands and attempt to match your position?
Watch for: Toddler imitates parent's yoga pose by bringing palms together in front of chest.
- 2~40s
Now let's add breathing. With palms still together, take a slow, deep breath together — in through the nose, out through the mouth. Say 'breathe in... and out' in a calm voice. Watch your child's shoulders. Do they relax? Does they follow your breathing rhythm? Notice if your child seems to calm down or become more focused as you breathe together.
Watch for: Toddler maintains standing balance while holding yoga pose and focusing on breathing.
- 3~35s
Let's hold this pose for a few more breaths together, making it a calming ritual. Use a soft voice to say 'We're getting ready for sleep' or 'Our bodies are calming down.' Notice if your child seems to understand this is part of bedtime preparation. Does they show signs of relaxation — slower movements, softer expression, deeper breathing? This connection between yoga and bedtime is what builds self-regulation.
Watch for: Toddler participates in bedtime yoga routine and shows understanding of its calming, pre-sleep purpose.
