What you'll need

Baby on tummy on a soft surface. Have a rattle or noisy toy within reach. Wait 20-30 minutes after a meal. Baby should be alert and not fussy.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Shake the rattle gently behind your child's head — not too loud, just enough to get their attention. Watch closely. Does your child try to lift their head to look for the sound? You might see their neck muscles tensing, or they might lift their head right up. Tell me what happens.

Watch for: While on tummy, baby lifts upper body in response to sound stimulus, using arms for support.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's make it more fun. Shake the rattle to your child's right side, at about ear level. Wait a moment, then move it to the left side and shake again. We want to see if your child turns their head to follow the sound from side to side. Does they extend their arms out in front to hold themself up while looking? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby extends arms out in front while on belly, supporting upper body to look around.

  3. 3~30s

For our last challenge, place the rattle just out of your child's reach — a few inches in front of them while they is still on their tummy. Give it a little shake to get their attention. Does your child try to reach for it? Does they scoot or lean forward? Even a small effort to stretch toward the rattle counts. What do you see?

Watch for: Baby attempts to reach for or grab an object while on tummy, showing motivation and early pre-crawling movement.
