What you'll need

Baby lying on tummy on a soft surface in a dim, quiet room. Have a small toy or visual distraction nearby if needed. Best done as part of bedtime routine when baby is calm but not yet asleep.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by gently placing your hands on your child's back. If they seems a bit fussy or restless, use slow, firm strokes from shoulders to bottom to help them settle. Watch their body language — does your child relax under your touch? You might notice their breathing slow down, their muscles soften, or they might let out a little sigh. Tell me what you observe as you begin this calming touch.

Watch for: Baby shows visible relaxation in response to parent's soothing touch during bedtime routine.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's begin our weather story. Say softly, 'Rain can fall,' and use your fingertips to trace slow, straight lines down your child's back. Then say, 'Thunder can strike,' while making gentle zig-zag motions. Notice if your child responds differently to the various touches — does they seem to notice the change from straight lines to zig-zags? Does their breathing or body position shift with the different strokes?

Watch for: Baby shows awareness and differentiated response to various tactile inputs during the weather-themed massage.

  3. 3~35s

Let's finish our weather story. Say, 'Blizzard can occur,' while gently tapping all over your child's back. Then, 'Tornadoes can swirl,' as you circle your fingers down their back. Finally, whisper, 'But no such weather could keep us apart,' and give your child a gentle hug and kiss. Notice how they responds to this loving closure — does your child lean into the hug? Make eye contact? Show any signs of contentment or connection?

Watch for: Baby shows positive engagement and connection during the closing hug and kiss of the bedtime ritual.
