What you'll need

Baby in carrier or sling facing parent's chest. Best done after dinner but before bedtime routine. Choose a quiet, safe walking route. Weather should be comfortable. No other materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Start by securing your child in the carrier, making sure they is comfortable and facing you. Begin walking at a gentle, steady pace. As you walk, notice your child's body against yours — does they relax into you? You might feel their breathing slow, their muscles soften, or they might rest their head on your chest. Tell me what you're noticing about your child's relaxation response.

Watch for: Baby shows signs of relaxation and calming in response to the gentle walking routine.

  2. 2~50s

Now as you continue walking, notice how your child responds to the outdoor environment. The fresh air, gentle sounds, changing light as the sun sets — these are all sensory inputs. Does your child seem soothed by these sensations or overwhelmed? Watch their face — does they close their eyes, look around calmly, or bury their face in your chest? Tell me about your child's sensory regulation outdoors.

Watch for: Baby regulates sensory input during the outdoor walk — neither overstimulated nor understimulated.

  3. 3~40s

For our final observation, try narrating the evening in a soft, calm voice. Talk about the fresh air, the sun going down, the quiet sounds around you. Watch your child's response to your voice during this peaceful moment. Does they make eye contact, smile sleepily, or respond with soft sounds? Or does they simply listen and relax further? This tells us about your child's social engagement during calming routines.

Watch for: Baby engages socially during the calming outdoor routine — through eye contact, vocalizations, or relaxed attention.
