What you'll need

Baby should be awake and alert. Have wipes, cloth, or washing supplies ready for a routine hygiene moment (hands, face, or diaper change).

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start cleaning your child's hands or face, and as you do, talk to them about it. Try something like, 'Let's get these little hands nice and clean!' Use a warm, sing-song voice. Then switch to a calm, soft tone — maybe whisper, 'All clean now.' Watch your child's face carefully. Does they react differently when you change your voice? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby shows different reactions to different tones of voice — may widen eyes at excited tone, calm down with soft tone, or startle at sudden changes.

  2. 2~30s

Now keep talking to your child as you continue the routine. This time, pause mid-sentence and hold eye contact with them. Say something like, 'your child, I'm going to wipe your little nose now!' and then pause, looking right at them. Does your child look back at you? Does they stare at your face while you're talking? Tell me what happens.

Watch for: Baby stares at the person who is talking to them, maintaining gaze during speech.

  3. 3~30s

For this last part, keep cleaning or tidying up around your child, but now move around a bit — lean to one side, then the other. Make silly faces, stick your tongue out, or open your mouth wide and say 'Ahhh!' Does your child watch your face as you move? Does they seem fascinated by your expressions? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby stares at people's faces, showing interest in facial features and expressions.
