Hip and Leg Stretches

What you'll need

Baby lying on back on a soft, flat surface. Room should be warm and comfortable. No materials needed. Best done when baby is alert but calm.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by giving your child a gentle full-body massage to help them relax. Use slow, firm strokes on their legs and belly. Now, gently hold their ankles and lift both legs a few inches off the surface. Watch your child's reaction — does they keep their legs lifted with you, or do they feel heavy and drop down? Even a small amount of leg control shows strengthening muscles. What do you notice?

Watch for: Baby maintains some leg elevation when parent lifts legs, showing active muscle engagement.

  2. 2~35s

Now, while your child is still on their back, see if they reaches for their own feet. You can gently bring their knees toward their chest to make it easier. Does your child grab their feet with their hands? This foot-grabbing is a classic milestone that shows coordination and body awareness. Watch for any attempt — even a brief touch counts!

Watch for: Baby reaches for and holds own feet while lying on back.

  3. 3~40s

Let's try the criss-cross motion now. Gently hold your child's ankles and cross one leg over the other — right over left, then left over right. Do this slowly and rhythmically, like a gentle bicycle. Watch your child's torso and neck — does they stay relaxed and stable, or does their body wiggle or tense up? Good torso control means they can handle movement without losing balance. What do you see?

Watch for: Baby maintains stable torso and neck during gentle leg crossing movements.
