What you'll need

Baby lying on back on soft surface, alert and calm. Room should be warm. Have 2-3 textured objects within reach (soft cloth, silky fabric, bumpy sponge, etc.). Baby can be undressed or in a diaper.

How it works

  1. 1~35s

Start with a soft textured cloth. Gently rub it on your child's feet and lower legs, using slow, circular motions. Watch what they does with their hands — does your child reach down toward their feet? Many babies at this age discover they can grab their own feet during massage. Tell me what you notice about their hand movements.

Watch for: Baby reaches for and grabs own feet while lying on back during foot massage.

  2. 2~30s

Now let's move to your child's tummy and back. Gently rub the textured object along their sides and back while they is lying on their tummy. Notice how your child holds their body — does they keep their head up? Does their torso feel stable, or does they wobble? This gives us clues about core strength and trunk control. What do you observe?

Watch for: Baby maintains stable head and torso position during tummy time massage.

  3. 3~30s

Let's turn your child back onto their back. Take a different textured object — maybe something bumpy or silky — and gently stroke it up and down their legs. Watch their leg movements closely. Does your child lift their legs off the surface? How high do they go? Some babies at this age can lift their legs several inches while exploring this sensation. Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby lifts legs off surface while lying on back during leg massage.
