Cross-Body Stretch Play

Parent guides baby through gentle cross-body stretches while lying on back, tapping opposite hand to opposite foot in a rhythmic pattern. The agent coaches the parent to observe bilateral coordination, midline crossing, and body awareness as baby experiences coordinated movement across the body's center line.

What you'll need

Baby lying on back on a soft surface (mat, blanket, or bed). Baby should be calm and alert, not fussy or sleepy. No materials needed. Room should be warm and comfortable.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by gently taking your child's right hand and left foot. Bring them together in the middle of their body and tap them lightly while saying in a sing-song voice: 'One, two, three, together!' Then slowly extend the hand above their head and the foot back down, saying 'One, two, three, apart!' Watch your child's face and body — does they seem to notice this cross-body connection? Does they relax into the stretch or show any reaction?

Watch for: Baby shows awareness or participation in cross-body movement when parent brings opposite hand and foot together.

  2. 2~40s

Now let's repeat the stretch five times with the same hand and foot. Each time you bring them together, notice if your child's eyes follow the movement across the midline — that imaginary line down the center of the body. Does they look at their hand and foot meeting in the middle? Also watch their torso — does it stay relaxed or does they try to lift their head to see better?

Watch for: Baby tracks movement across the body's midline with eyes or shows awareness of limbs crossing the center.

  3. 3~35s

Now switch to the other side — left hand and right foot. Do five stretches on this side too. As you work, notice your child's overall body control. Does their torso stay stable during the stretches? Does they try to lift their legs or arms independently? After the stretches, give their belly a gentle tickle with eye contact — does they laugh or squirm with delight?

Watch for: Baby maintains stable torso position during stretches and shows controlled limb movements.
