What you'll need

Baby lying on back on soft surface, calm and alert. Room should be quiet with dim lighting to signal nap preparation. No materials needed. Best done as part of regular nap routine.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by gently taking your child's hands in yours. Slowly raise their arms above their head, then lower them back down beside their belly. Move slowly and rhythmically, like you're doing a gentle stretch together. Watch your child's face and body — does they seem to relax into the movement? Does they make eye contact or show any signs of enjoying this connection? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby remains calm and relaxed during gentle stretching touch, showing trust and comfort with parent's handling.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's add some direction words. Gently extend your child's left arm to the left side while saying 'left,' then bring it back. Do the same with the right arm while saying 'right.' You can also try 'up' and 'down' with both arms together. Notice if your child seems to follow your voice or shows any awareness of the different directions. Does they seem more relaxed on one side versus the other?

Watch for: Baby shows awareness of different body positions and directions during stretching movements.

  3. 3~30s

For our final stretch, bring your child's arms in for a gentle hug — opening and closing their arms toward and away from their belly. As you do this, say something loving like 'I love you every day and every night' or another sweet phrase you use. Watch for signs that your child is settling into a relaxed, sleepy state. Does they yawn, get drowsy-eyed, or cuddle into the movements? This is about creating that peaceful transition to nap time.

Watch for: Baby shows signs of relaxation and readiness for sleep in response to consistent bedtime routine activity.
