What you'll need

Before bedtime, in child's bedroom. Have child's pajamas and favorite nighttime toy ready. Room should be calm with dim lighting. Child should be awake but winding down.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

First, hide the pajamas and toy in two different spots that are visible but not obvious — maybe under the edge of the bed or behind a pillow. Then tell your child, 'Let's play hide and seek! Your pajamas and {toy_name} are hiding. Can you find them?' Watch how your child responds. Does they start looking right away? Does they remember what they is looking for?

Watch for: Toddler remembers and searches for hidden objects after a brief delay.

  2. 2~35s

Now offer a little help if needed. Say, 'Is it under the bed? Let's check together!' or 'Maybe behind the chair?' Watch if your child follows your verbal guidance. Does they go where you suggest? Does they understand simple location words like 'under' or 'behind'?

Watch for: Toddler follows simple one-step instructions involving location or action.

  3. 3~30s

As your child finds the items, celebrate warmly and say, 'You found them! Now we can get ready for bed.' Watch their emotional response. Does they transition smoothly from the game to putting on pajamas? Or does they resist ending the game? This tells us about their emotional regulation during routine transitions.

Watch for: Toddler manages emotions during transition from play to routine activity.
