What you'll need
Baby lying on back on a safe, comfortable surface. Clean outfit within reach. Room should be warm. Best done when baby is calm and alert — not hungry or tired.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start by gently removing your child's current clothing. As you take off each piece, narrate what you're doing: 'Let's take off your sleeve... and now the other sleeve.' Watch your child's face and body closely. Does they notice the clothing being removed? You might see them startle slightly, relax, or make eye contact with you. Tell me what you observe.
Watch for: Baby shows awareness of clothing being removed — may move limbs, change expression, or look at parent.
- 2~35s
Now take the new outfit and gently touch it to your child's skin before putting it on — maybe on their arm or cheek. Say 'Feel how soft this is!' Then slowly put on the first piece. Notice how your child reacts to the new fabric. Does they seem to notice the different texture? Does they settle into it or pull away? Watch for any signs of sensory adaptation.
Watch for: Baby adapts to new clothing sensations — may initially react then settle, showing sensory processing flexibility.
- 3~25s
As you finish dressing your child, lean in close and make eye contact. Say something like 'All dressed! Look how cozy you are!' Watch their face. Does your child look back at you? Does they make any sounds or facial expressions in response? This final connection turns the routine into a social moment.
Watch for: Baby makes eye contact with parent during or after dressing, showing social engagement in care routines.
