Soapy Toy Wash

What you'll need
Parent and child standing near a sink, basin, or water-safe play area. No actual soap or water needed for pretend play, but can use if desired. Best done when child is in a playful, cooperative mood.
How it works

Start by picking up a toy and pretending to wash it under imaginary water. Make it dramatic — turn on the 'faucet,' rub soap on the toy, scrub it, then 'rinse' it off. Say something like, 'Look, your child, teddy needs a bath! Let's wash his hands.' Then hand the toy to your child and say, 'Your turn! Can you wash teddy?' Watch to see if your child tries to copy your actions. Does they make washing motions?
Watch for: Child imitates hand washing or cleaning motions during pretend play.

Now let's expand the pretend play. Pick up another toy and say, 'This one is really dirty! It needs lots of soap.' Make exaggerated scrubbing sounds and faces. Then say, 'Now let's wash OUR hands!' and pretend to wash your own hands with soap. Ask your child, 'Can you wash your hands too?' Watch if your child pretends to wash their own hands. Does they understand the shift from toy to self?
Watch for: Child engages in pretend play involving imaginary objects and actions.

For our last step, turn this into a cooperative routine. Say, 'All clean! Now let's dry everything.' Pretend to dry the toys with a towel, then offer your child the 'towel' to dry their hands. Make it a sequence — wash, rinse, dry. Notice if your child follows the sequence and stays engaged with you. Does they participate willingly? Does they show any signs of understanding this as a hygiene routine?
