What you'll need
Baby in a safe, supervised spot where they can watch the process — in a bouncer, high chair, or on parent's hip. Frozen breast milk and a bowl of warm (not hot) water ready. Kitchen or feeding area works well.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start by showing your child the frozen milk bag. Hold it up where they can see it and say something like, 'Look, your child! Milk time soon!' Then place it in the bowl of warm water. Watch your child's face closely — does they seem to recognize this as part of a feeding routine? You might see them get excited, make eye contact with you, or show signs of anticipation like kicking legs or reaching. Tell me what you notice.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of anticipation when parent begins a familiar caregiving routine like preparing milk.
- 2~40s
Now as the milk thaws, keep talking to your child. Describe what you're doing: 'The ice is melting... getting warmer... almost ready!' Watch how your child engages with you during this waiting period. Does they maintain eye contact? Respond to your voice with sounds or smiles? Try pausing your narration and see if your child vocalizes to keep the interaction going. What social behaviors do you see?
Watch for: Baby actively engages with parent during caregiving activity through eye contact, vocalizations, or responsive smiles.
- 3~30s
As the milk finishes thawing, show your child the transformation. Hold up the bag so they can see the liquid moving: 'Look! No more ice — now it's milk!' Then pour it into a bottle if you're using one. Watch your child's reaction to this final step. Does they seem to understand that the thawing process caused the milk to be ready? You might see recognition, increased excitement, or even impatience as they connects the preparation with the imminent feeding.
Watch for: Baby shows understanding that parent's actions (thawing) lead to a desired outcome (feeding).
