Texture Exploration

Parent introduces baby to different textures in a tub setting — sponges, towels, and cereals — caressing baby first and then letting baby play freely with the materials. The agent guides the parent to observe how baby reaches for materials, holds them with the whole hand, and explores textures during supported sitting.

What you'll need

Baby seated near or in a shallow plastic tub. Parent supporting baby from behind or holding both arms. Have sponges, towels, and dried cereal or pasta in the tub. Supervise closely.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Before we put your child with the tub, let's warm up those senses. Take a sponge and gently caress your child's arms and legs with it. Then try the towel. Watch their reaction — does your child seem to enjoy the different feelings? Does they smile, squirm, or reach for the materials? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby responds to different textures being applied to skin — showing sensory awareness and beginning preferences.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's place your child in or near the tub. Hold them securely from both arms so they feels safe. Let your child reach into the tub and explore the materials. Watch specifically for whether your child extends their arms to reach for the materials and whether they grasps them with their whole hand. Does they grab the sponge? Pull the towel? Pick up cereal pieces?

Watch for: Baby extends arms to reach for materials in the tub and grasps them with whole hand.

  3. 3~25s

While your child is exploring, let's take a moment to notice their sitting. You're supporting them from both arms — can you try loosening your hold just slightly? Does your child maintain their upright position with the pillows or tub edge for support? Don't let go completely — just ease up a bit and watch if your child's trunk stays steady. The tub exploration is a great motivator for sitting because there's something interesting to reach for!

Watch for: Baby maintains upright sitting position when supported by pillows, furniture, or parent's light hold.
