Banana and Almond Butter Energy Bites

Parent and child work together to make simple no-bake energy bites using banana and almond butter, observing planning, measurement, and fine motor coordination. The agent coaches the parent to notice cognitive planning, following multi-step instructions, and collaborative kitchen skills appropriate for 5-6 year olds.

What you'll need

Clean kitchen workspace with mixing bowl, measuring spoons, ripe banana, almond butter, and rolled oats. Child should have washed hands. Parent should supervise all steps involving utensils.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Start by talking through the recipe steps together. Say to your child: 'First we mash the banana, then we add almond butter, then we mix in oats, then we roll them into balls.' Ask your child: 'What do we do first?' Watch how your child processes the sequence. Does they remember the first step? Can they predict what comes next?

Watch for: Child demonstrates ability to plan and sequence multiple steps in a cooking activity.

  2. 2~45s

Now let's measure the ingredients. Give your child the measuring spoon and say: 'We need two tablespoons of almond butter. Can you scoop two?' Watch how your child approaches measurement. Does they understand 'two' as a quantity? Does they count the scoops? What about the oats — we need about half a cup. Does your child understand 'half' as a portion concept?

Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding of measurement quantities (two tablespoons, half cup) in practical context.

  3. 3~50s

Time for the fun part — rolling the energy bites! Show your child how to take a small amount of mixture and roll it between their palms to make a ball. Watch their technique. Does your child use both hands together? Are the balls relatively round and evenly sized? Does they adjust pressure if the mixture is too sticky or crumbly?

Watch for: Child demonstrates precise hand coordination in rolling uniform energy bites.
