What you'll need

Playtime has just ended with toys scattered around. Parent and child are in the play area together. No special materials needed — just the toys that need to be put away.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by singing a simple cleanup song to the tune of 'Frère Jacques' — 'Time to clean up, time to clean up, pick up toys, pick up toys.' Sing it cheerfully and slowly while picking up one toy yourself. Then hand your child a toy and say, 'Your turn! Can you put this in the basket?' Watch how your child responds to the song and your invitation. Does they take the toy? Does they seem interested in the game?

Watch for: Toddler participates in cleanup routine by taking a toy when offered and showing willingness to help.

  2. 2~35s

Now try giving a simple instruction without handing your child the toy directly. Point to a toy and say, 'your child, can you pick up the red block and put it in the basket?' Use clear, simple language. Watch if your child follows through with just the verbal instruction. Does they understand which toy you're referring to? Does they complete the two-step action — pick up AND put away?

Watch for: Toddler follows a simple two-step instruction related to the cleanup activity.

  3. 3~40s

For our last round, step back a bit and see if your child shows any spontaneous helping behavior. Continue singing the cleanup song but pause occasionally. Does your child pick up toys without being asked? Does they put toys in the right place or try to organize them? Notice if they seems proud of their helping — maybe showing you a toy before putting it away or smiling when the area gets tidier.

Watch for: Toddler demonstrates spontaneous helping behavior during cleanup without direct prompting.
