Sink or Float Discovery

Parent and toddler explore buoyancy by testing fruits and vegetables in water, predicting and observing which sink and which float. The agent coaches the parent to observe fine motor control, object manipulation, and early scientific reasoning as the child handles different objects and makes discoveries about their properties.

What you'll need

Large container filled halfway with water placed on a waterproof surface. At least 5 different fruits/vegetables nearby — some that sink (carrot, potato) and some that float (apple, orange). Towel handy for spills. Toddler should be able to stand or sit comfortably at the container.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by holding up one fruit or vegetable — maybe an apple. Show it to your child and ask, 'Do you think this will sink or float?' Then hand it to them and let them place it in the water. Watch how your child handles the object — does they hold it securely? Does they drop it accidentally or place it carefully? Tell me what you notice about their grip and control.

Watch for: Toddler handles objects without accidental dropping, showing improved fine motor control and grip strength.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's try something a bit trickier. Give your child two small objects at once — maybe two grapes or two cherry tomatoes. See if they can hold both in one hand while using the other hand to place one in the water. Or maybe they will transfer one to the other hand. Watch how your child manages multiple objects — does they hold both? Drop one? Get creative with their hands?

Watch for: Toddler holds two small objects in one hand, demonstrating advanced fine motor capacity and hand coordination.

  3. 3~40s

For our last exploration, try giving your child something that can be pressed or turned in the water — maybe a lemon that they can push down or a floating apple that they can spin. Watch what your child does. Does they press objects underwater with their palms? Try to turn floating things? Experiment with force and movement? Notice how they uses their hands to explore the properties of the objects.

Watch for: Toddler uses pressing motions with hands — pushing objects underwater or squeezing them between palms — showing developing hand strength and exploratory action.
