Parent uses a timer to create a fun countdown during toothbrushing, helping toddler develop healthy habits while learning about time concepts. What you'll need
Bathroom or brushing area with toothbrush, toothpaste, and timer ready. Child should be standing or seated comfortably for brushing. Best done during regular brushing routine.
How it works

Start by showing your child the timer on your phone. Say excitedly, 'We're going to brush until the timer goes beep!' Set it for 30 seconds and press start. Watch your child's reaction — does they look at the timer? Does they seem to understand that something will happen when it beeps? Tell me what you notice.
Watch for: Toddler shows awareness that the timer marks a period of time and anticipates the alarm.

Now start brushing together. Say 'Brush, brush, brush until the beep!' Help your child if needed, but also encourage independent brushing. Watch how they participates — does they open their mouth cooperatively? Does they try to brush their own teeth or hold the brush? Notice their level of engagement with this routine task.
Watch for: Toddler cooperates with toothbrushing routine — opens mouth, allows brushing, or attempts to participate.

When the timer beeps, celebrate dramatically! Say 'You did it! You brushed until the time was up!' Give your child a high five or happy dance. Watch their reaction — does they seem proud of completing the task? Does they understand the brushing is done because the timer went off? This connection between timer and task completion is key for routine building.
Watch for: Toddler completes the toothbrushing routine in response to the timer ending, showing understanding of routine boundaries.
