What you'll need

Prepare bath as usual. Mix shaving cream with food coloring in a plastic bowl before bath begins. Have paintbrush ready. Ensure toddler is comfortable and safe in bath before introducing materials.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by showing your child the colored shaving cream. Say something like, 'Look what we have today — blue paint for the bath!' Hand them the paintbrush and encourage them to dip it in and start painting on the tiles or tub wall. Watch how your child responds to the color. Does they seem excited? Does they try to name the color or point to it? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Toddler attempts to name or identify the color of the shaving cream paint.

  2. 2~40s

Now watch how your child uses the paintbrush. Does they hold it with a full fist or more like a pencil? Notice the strokes — are they random swipes or more controlled lines? You can suggest, 'Can you draw a line?' or 'Make dots!' See if your child can follow simple drawing directions. What do you observe about their brush control?

Watch for: Toddler demonstrates controlled brush strokes, showing developing fine motor skills.

  3. 3~35s

For the last few minutes, step back and let your child paint freely. Watch what they creates — does they experiment with different strokes? Mix colors if you have more than one? Does your child seem proud of their artwork? You might say, 'Tell me about your painting!' See if they describes it or names what they made. What creative choices do you notice?

Watch for: Toddler engages in creative painting, showing imagination and personal expression.
