Taste and Texture Exploration

Parent offers toddler the same food prepared in different textures (raw, steamed, baked) to observe texture preferences and fine motor handling. The agent coaches the parent to notice how toddler holds, manipulates, and explores different food textures — building sensory awareness and fine motor skills while discovering food preferences.

What you'll need

Toddler seated at a table or high chair. Three small portions of the same food prepared differently (raw, steamed, baked) arranged on a plate within reach. Ensure toddler is alert and not overly hungry or full. Have a napkin or cloth handy.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Let's start by offering all three textures at once. Place the plate in front of your child and say, 'Look at these different {food_name}s! Which one would you like to try?' Watch how they approaches them. Does your child pick up one piece? Does they try to hold more than one piece in the same hand? Notice if they seems curious about the different looks and feels.

Watch for: Toddler holds two food pieces in one hand simultaneously while exploring.

  2. 2~45s

Now watch what your child does with the food in their hands. Does they squeeze the steamed or baked pieces? Does they press them between their palms or fingers? Notice if your child explores the raw piece differently — maybe tapping it or trying to bend it. The way they manipulates each texture tells us about their sensory curiosity and hand strength.

Watch for: Toddler presses softer food textures between hands or fingers, exploring malleability.

  3. 3~40s

Let's focus on how your child handles the pieces they likes most. When they picks up a preferred piece, does your child hold it securely without dropping it accidentally? Does they bring it carefully to their mouth or examine it closely? Also notice if they tries to spin or turn any pieces — some toddlers will rotate food to look at all sides. What do you observe?

Watch for: Toddler handles food pieces with control, not dropping them accidentally during exploration.
