What you'll need
Kitchen counter with blender and smoothie ingredients (banana, leafy greens, liquid base, optional sweetener) within safe reach of child. Child should be standing on a stable step stool if needed. Ensure blender is unplugged when not in use.
How it works
- 1~40s
Start by inviting your child to help pour. You might say, 'We need one banana and a handful of spinach. Can you put them in the blender?' Hand your child the pre-measured ingredients one at a time. Watch how they approaches the task. Does your child take the initiative to drop them in? Does they wait for your instruction or jump right in? Tell me what you notice.
Watch for: Child shows initiative and pride in helping with a real task, demonstrating growing autonomy.
- 2~30s
Now for a two-step instruction. Say, 'First, we put the lid on tight. Then, you can press the button.' Demonstrate placing the lid and securing it. Then, point to the blender button. Does your child remember both steps? Watch if they tries to press the button before the lid is on, or if they waits for the correct sequence. What does your child do?
Watch for: Child follows a two-step instruction involving sequence (lid on, then button) without needing reminder.
- 3~35s
As you pour the smoothie into cups, have a little chat. Say, 'This green smoothie makes our bodies strong. The spinach gives us energy!' Watch your child's reaction. Does they seem interested? Does they ask a question or make a comment about the healthy ingredients? Tell me about your conversation.
Watch for: Child shows curiosity or basic understanding about how food relates to health.
