What you'll need

Have a plastic container with secure lid, washable paint, and paper shapes ready. Best done before bath time as it can get messy. Child should be seated at a table or on floor with container accessible.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's begin by inviting your child to pick up the paper shapes. Place a few shapes on the table and say, 'Can you pick one up and put it in our container?' Watch how your child grasps the shapes. Does they use their whole hand or just thumb and forefinger? Tell me what you notice about their grip.

Watch for: Child uses thumb and forefinger to pick up small paper shapes.

  2. 2~35s

Now let's add some paint to the container and invite your child to put the shapes inside. Watch as they moves the shapes from the table into the container. Does your child successfully transfer them? Does they drop any or have trouble releasing them into the container? This transferring action is a key fine motor skill.

Watch for: Child moves paper shapes from table into container with control.

  3. 3~40s

Now close the lid securely and invite your child to shake the container vigorously! This is the fun part where they gets to release energy. Watch how your child holds and shakes the container. Does they use both hands? Does they shake with enthusiasm and maybe even some big body movements? After shaking, open it together and admire your colorful creation.

Watch for: Child successfully placed shapes into container opening, demonstrating insertion skill.
