What you'll need
Parent holding baby comfortably for bottle feeding, ideally in a position where they can see each other's faces. Baby should be alert and ready to feed. Quiet environment helps baby focus on parent's voice.
How it works
- 1~30s
As you begin feeding your child, start by making gentle eye contact. Speak softly about how happy you are to be with them right now — you might say, 'I love this time with you' or 'You're eating so well.' Watch your child's eyes closely. Does they look back at you? Does their gaze soften or stay connected with yours? Tell me what you notice about your child's eye contact during these first moments.
Watch for: Baby maintains eye contact with parent during feeding, showing social engagement and connection.
- 2~35s
Now let's create a little conversation. After you say something sweet to your child, pause and wait. See if they makes any sound in response — a coo, a sigh, a little 'mmm' sound. When your child vocalizes, respond as if they just said something important: 'Oh, you think so?' or 'Tell me more!' Watch if your child makes another sound after your response. Is there a back-and-forth rhythm emerging?
Watch for: Baby vocalizes in response to parent's speech during feeding, showing early conversational turn-taking.
- 3~30s
For our final observation, focus on your child's overall contentment. As you continue speaking softly — maybe about how much they is loved or how well they is growing — watch your child's body language. Do you see relaxed shoulders, gentle hand movements, a peaceful expression? Maybe they reaches toward your face or touches the bottle with contentment. Describe your child's emotional state during this connected feeding time.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of contentment and relaxation during social feeding interaction.
