How it works
- 1~30s
As you begin feeding your child, start by making gentle eye contact. Then begin to hum or sing softly — any song that comes to mind, or just a gentle melody. It doesn't need to be perfect. Watch your child's face as you sing. Does they maintain eye contact with you? Does their body seem to relax into the feeding? Tell me what you notice about their engagement.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of bonding and connection during feeding when parent sings or hums.
- 2~35s
Now try varying your singing — sometimes soft, sometimes a bit louder, sometimes pausing between phrases. Watch your child's eyes. When you pause, does they look at you as if waiting for more? Does they maintain eye contact even during sucking pauses? This back-and-forth gaze is early conversation. What do you see?
Watch for: Baby maintains eye contact with parent during feeding, especially during pauses in sucking or singing.
- 3~30s
For our final observation, notice your child's overall state. Does your singing seem to help them feed more calmly? Watch their hands — are they relaxed or clenched? Breathing — is it steady or irregular? Body — is they snuggled in or tense? Your voice can be a powerful regulator. Describe your child's level of calm.
Watch for: Baby shows signs of calming and regulation in response to parent's singing voice during feeding.
