Tactile Exploration
Parent lays baby on different fabric textures and lets them explore freely, then gently caresses baby with each fabric. The agent guides the parent to observe how baby responds to different textures — noticing preferences, grasping attempts, and sensory reactions that reveal developing tactile processing and fine motor coordination.

What you'll need
Baby seated or lying on the floor on a collection of different fabric textures. Room should be comfortable. Have 3-5 different textured fabrics available.
How it works
- 1~40s
Go ahead and let your child explore the fabrics freely for a moment. Watch closely — does they reach out to touch them? Does they seem to notice the differences between the textures? Some babies will pat at them, some will try to grab a fistful, and some might bring the fabric to their mouth. Tell me what your child is doing.
Watch for: Baby shows interest in the textures — reaching, touching, patting, or showing different reactions to different fabrics.
- 2~30s
Now let's see how your child handles the fabrics. Offer them a small piece of fabric — something easy to grab like a washcloth. Hold it out and see if your child reaches for it and grabs it. Watch how they holds it — does they use the whole hand to grab it? Does they hold on or let go quickly?
Watch for: Baby reaches for and grasps the fabric using their whole hand (palmar grasp).
- 3~35s
Now it's your turn to be the explorer! Take one of the softer fabrics and gently caress your child's arms and legs with it. Then switch to a rougher texture — maybe the corduroy or a terry cloth. Watch your child's face and body carefully. Does they react differently to the soft versus the rough? Does they seem to prefer one over the other? Tell me what you see.
Watch for: Baby shows different reactions to soft versus rough textures, indicating tactile discrimination.
