Self Recognition Activity

Parent uses a mirror and hand play to help baby build a self-image. The agent guides the parent through naming body parts, clapping hands together in front of the mirror, and gentle massage — observing hand regard, social smiling at reflection, and positive responses to loving touch as signs of developing self-awareness and emotional bonding.

What you'll need

Baby held by parent or seated in lap, positioned in front of a mirror at baby's eye level. Baby should be alert and in a good mood. Mirror should be large enough for baby to see both themselves and parent.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Start by showing your child their own hands. Hold them up gently where they can see them and say 'your child, look at your hands! These are your child's hands.' Use their name — it helps with self-recognition. Watch — does your child look at their hands? Does they seem curious about them? You might see them staring or trying to move their fingers. Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Baby looks at own hands when shown them, showing developing self-awareness and body recognition.

  2. 2~30s

Now bring your child's hands together in front of the mirror and help them clap. Nice and gentle — 'Yay, your child! Clap clap!' Watch the mirror — does your child notice the reflection? Does they look at the baby in the mirror? Some babies smile at their reflection, others stare curiously. Does your child seem to connect the clapping feeling with what they sees in the mirror?

Watch for: Baby responds to own mirror reflection — looking, smiling, or showing interest in the reflected image.

  3. 3~25s

Now give your child's hands a gentle massage while telling them how lovely they are — 'What beautiful hands you have, your child.' You can do this while looking in the mirror or face to face. Watch your child's response to your loving words and gentle touch. Does they smile? Does they relax into the massage? Does they look at you with joy? This combination of touch and praise is incredibly powerful for bonding.

Watch for: Baby responds positively to gentle massage and loving words — smiling, relaxing, cooing, or gazing at parent.

  4. 4~30s

Let's put it all together. Hold your child facing the mirror and do some playful interaction — wave their hand, point to body parts in the reflection, and say things like 'Where's your child? There they is!' Watch your child's reaction to this playful mirror game. Does they look at the mirror with interest? Does they smile or get excited? Does they seem to recognize that the movements in the mirror match what they feels?

Watch for: Baby shows engagement with mirror play — looking at reflection, responding to name, or showing signs of connecting visual reflection with bodily sensation.
