How it works

  1. 1

First, let's draw some shapes together. Take out the colored paper and draw circles, triangles, and squares in different sizes. Then invite your child to try drawing a circle on their own. You can show one as an example. Watch how your child approaches this drawing task.

  2. 2

Now let's cut out the shapes together. You can help with cutting if needed, then let your child paste the shapes freely on the cardstock paper. As they picks up each shape, say its name clearly. Notice how your child handles the shapes and glue.

  3. 3

As your child continues working, point to different shapes in the collage and ask 'What shape is this?' Let's see how many shapes they can name independently. Pay attention to your child's shape recognition.

  4. 4

Almost done! Let's look at the finished collage together. Ask your child to find all the circles, or all the big shapes, or all the red shapes. Notice how your child sorts or compares the shapes.
