How it works

  1. 1

Great! Now that your child has chosen an activity, join in and watch what they does. Listen for any words they says while playing. When you hear a word, repeat it back with enthusiasm and add a describing word. For example, if your child says 'block,' you could say 'Yes, a red block!'

  2. 2

Now, let's introduce some open-ended questions. While playing, ask your child a 'what' or 'where' question about what you're doing. For example, if you're building, ask, 'What should we add next?' or 'Where does this block go?'

  3. 3

Let's focus on imitation. Notice if your child mimics your words, your tone of voice, or your gestures. For example, if you say 'crash!' excitedly while knocking down blocks, see if they copies your word or your playful expression.
