How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by inviting your child to create a story. Say something like: 'Let's make up a story together! What should our story be about?' If your child needs a little help, you could suggest: 'Maybe a story about a child who goes on an adventure to the park?'

  2. 2

Now let's help your child develop the story. Ask: 'What happens first in our story?' or 'Tell me what happens next.' Listen to how your child puts sentences together.

  3. 3

Now let's build the middle of the story. Ask: 'Then what happens?' or 'How does our character feel about that?' Encourage your child to add details and emotions.

  4. 4

Let's help your child create an ending. Ask: 'How does our story finish?' or 'What happens at the end?' Then suggest acting it out with stuffed animals or dolls.
