Let's get talking III

Choose a distraction-free time, make eye contact, and start a conversation about the day. For a challenge, ask your child to tell their day as a story. Notice sentence phrasing and how many sentences they string together. Ask open-ended questions to keep the conversation flowing.

How it works

  1. 1

Start by making warm eye contact with your child. Say something like, 'I'd love to hear about your day! What was something fun that happened?'

  2. 2

Now, ask an open-ended question to keep it going. Try, 'What happened after that?' or 'How did that make you feel?'

  3. 3

For a gentle challenge, say, 'Can you tell me about your day like it's a little story? What happened first?'

  4. 4

Wrap up by summarizing and praising. Say, 'I loved hearing your story about today! Thank you for talking with me.'
