Behind the story II

Find a cozy place to cuddle up and read with your little one. Let {child_name} choose what story you'll read and then begin reading it out loud. While reading, take time to ask simple 'who', 'what' and 'where' questions about the story. Put {his_her} grammar skills to the test by specifically asking {child_name} to name something that {he_she} would have to convert to plural form.

How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by letting your child choose a book. Once you've settled in, begin reading aloud. After a page or two, pause and ask a simple 'who' question about the story, like 'Who is this character?' or 'Who is doing that?'

  2. 2

Now let's try a 'what' question. As you continue reading, pause at an interesting illustration and ask something like 'What is happening here?' or 'What do you see?'

  3. 3

Now let's try a 'where' question. Find a page where the location is clear and ask something like 'Where is the dog?' or 'Where are they?'

  4. 4

Now let's work on plural words. Find an illustration with multiple objects, like several dogs, balls, or trees. Ask 'What are these?' to encourage your child to use a plural form.
