Pretend Burgers I
A pretend cooking activity using playdough to practice food preparation skills and build independence through imaginative play.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
How it works
- 1
Let's begin by making our burger ingredients. Show your child how to mix the playdough colors to create light brown for the buns, dark brown for the patty, red for tomato, yellow for cheese, white for onion, and green for lettuce. Then invite them to help roll and flatten circles of each color.
- 2
Now let's practice 'cutting' our burger. Show your child how to use the side of their hand or a plastic knife to pretend-cut the playdough patty and vegetables. Talk about safe cutting motions - away from fingers, slow and controlled.
- 3
Time to assemble our burgers! Guide your child to layer the ingredients: bun, patty, cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, and top bun. Encourage them to name each layer as they builds.
- 4
Let's extend the play! Ask your child to 'serve' the burger to you or a stuffed animal. Encourage them to use pretend kitchen phrases like 'Hot burger coming up!' or 'Careful, it's warm!'
