Zipping Up and Down Practice

Parent guides child through a simulated zipping activity using a ribbon and bread ties, observing fine motor coordination, self-dressing skills, and independent choice-making. The agent coaches the parent to notice hand-eye coordination, persistence with challenging tasks, and emerging autonomy in self-care routines.

What you'll need

Ribbon (about 30 cm) with knots at both ends, 5 plastic bread ties, and a clothespin. Child should be seated comfortably at a table or on the floor where they can look down at the ribbon as if looking at their own clothing. Parent positioned to demonstrate and assist.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

First, show your child how to pinch a bread tie in half width-wise and attach it to the ribbon. Place the ribbon under their chin so they has to look down at it, just like when zipping a real jacket. Then hand your child a bread tie and say 'Your turn!' Watch how they approaches this task. Does your child successfully pinch and attach the tie? Is there frustration or persistence? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Child demonstrates hand-eye coordination and finger strength by pinching bread ties and attaching them to ribbon.

  2. 2~50s

Now that you have a few ties on the ribbon, show your child the 'zipping' motion. Hold the bottom knot and demonstrate pulling the clothespin up the ribbon, catching each bread tie as you go. Then let your child try. Watch how they coordinates both hands - one holding the ribbon steady, the other operating the 'zipper.' Does your child understand the up-and-down motion? Does they persist through mistakes?

Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding and coordination of zipping motion through simulated activity.

  3. 3~60s

For this final round, let's focus on independence. Ask your child, 'How should we arrange the ties this time?' Give them the remaining bread ties and let them decide where to place them on the ribbon. Then encourage them to complete the zipping practice independently. Watch for signs of autonomy - does your child make deliberate choices? Does they show pride in completing the task their own way?

Watch for: Child demonstrates independent decision-making and takes ownership of self-care practice.
