Is It the Same or Different?

Parent shows child photos of themselves at different ages, helping them recognize their own identity across time while understanding that preferences and appearances change. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's self-awareness, personal information knowledge, and emerging understanding of personal identity continuity.

What you'll need

Parent and child sitting comfortably together at a table or on the floor. 4-5 photos of the child at different ages spread out within view. Photos should show clear developmental changes. No other materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by showing your child the first photo - maybe a baby picture. Point to it and say 'Look, this is you when you were a baby!' Watch your child's reaction closely. Does they recognize themself? Does they seem surprised, curious, or proud? Notice if they points to the photo or makes any comments about their own image. Tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Child recognizes themselves in photos and shows awareness that the images represent them across time.

  2. 2~35s

Now spread out all the photos and point to each one. Say 'This is you at 1 year old, this is you at 2 years old, and this is you now!' Then ask your child a simple question: 'Can you tell me your name?' Listen carefully to their response. Does they say their full name? First name only? Or maybe they points to themself instead of answering verbally? Notice how they shares this personal information.

Watch for: Child shares personal information like their name when asked, showing developing self-knowledge and identity.

  3. 3~45s

Now let's explore changes and constants. Point to two different photos and ask: 'What's different about you in these pictures?' Then ask: 'What's the same about you?' Help your child notice things like hair length, clothing, size, or activities. Watch for their understanding that while appearances change, they remains the same person. Does they grasp this continuity? Does they show awareness of gender consistency or personal preferences that have stayed the same?

Watch for: Child shows awareness of consistent gender identity across different ages and appearances in photos.
