Let's Go to the Supermarket!
Parent and child engage in imaginative supermarket play, pretending to shop for groceries. The agent coaches the parent to observe how the child incorporates others into pretend play, demonstrates understanding of size concepts, and imitates adult shopping behaviors — building cognitive skills in imagination, problem-solving, and social understanding.

What you'll need
Clear play area with space for 'store' setup. Gather basket/bag, pretend food items (or safe real items like apples, boxes), optional pretend money. Parent and child should be facing each other in play space.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start by telling your child, 'Let's pretend we're going to the supermarket!' Give them the basket and say, 'How does you pick groceries at the store?' Watch what your child does next. Does they immediately start pretending to shop? Does they look at you for guidance or jump right into the game? Tell me how your child begins this pretend play.
Watch for: Child imitates adult shopping behaviors in pretend play — picking items, placing in basket, walking through 'aisles'.
- 2~35s
Now let's explore size concepts. Hold up two different sized items — maybe an apple and a lime, or a big box and small box. Ask your child, 'Which is bigger?' or 'Show me the small one.' Watch how your child responds. Does they point to or pick up the correct item? Does they seem confident about size differences?
Watch for: Child correctly identifies 'big' and 'small' items when asked during pretend shopping play.
- 3~40s
Now let's see how your child includes others in their imaginative play. You might say, 'Should we buy something for Grandma?' or 'What would our pet want from the store?' Watch your child's response. Does they consider other people or pets in the shopping game? Does they pretend to shop for someone else or include them in the story?
Watch for: Child incorporates other people or pets into pretend supermarket play — shopping for them, considering their preferences, including them in the narrative.
