What you'll need
Parent and child sitting comfortably together in a quiet space. No materials needed — this is purely imaginative play. Ensure minimal distractions so child can focus on storytelling.
How it works
- 1~45s
Start by telling your child you're going to play a make-believe game about spending a whole day at the beach. Ask, 'What would we do first when we get there?' Help your child describe the beginning of the day in order. You might ask, 'How do we get to the beach? What do we wear? What's the very first thing we do when we arrive?' Listen carefully to how your child puts events in sequence. Tell me what they says.
Watch for: Child describes imaginary events in a logical, sequential order, showing understanding of narrative structure.
- 2~50s
Now let's add some magic to our beach day. Ask your child, 'What if we met a friendly sea creature at the beach? What would it look like? What would we do together?' Encourage them to invent something completely imaginary — maybe a talking starfish or a dolphin that can fly. Notice how your child creates and describes fantasy elements. Does they give details? Is they excited about the invention?
Watch for: Child invents and describes imaginary characters or objects with creative details during pretend play.
- 3~55s
For our final turn, let's see how your child mixes real and make-believe. Continue the beach story, but now ask questions that blend both: 'What real snack would we eat at the beach, and what magical thing might happen while we're eating it?' Or 'Who from our real family is with us, and what imaginary friend did they bring?' Watch how your child navigates between factual and fantasy elements in the same narrative.
Watch for: Child seamlessly mixes realistic and fantastical elements within the same pretend-play narrative.
