What you'll need

Open floor space clear of obstacles. A blanket large enough for parent and child to stand on together. Parent and child standing facing each other near the blanket.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

    Let's start simple. Spread the blanket on the floor and say 'Simon says... stand ON the blanket!' Model this yourself first — step onto the blanket with big, clear movements. Then invite your child to join you. Watch closely — does your child understand what 'on' means? Does they step onto the blanket correctly, or does they need to watch you first? Tell me what you notice.

    Watch for: Child demonstrates understanding of 'on' by correctly positioning self on the blanket when instructed.

  2. 2~40s

    Now let's contrast two concepts. Say 'Simon says... go UNDER the blanket!' Crouch down and pull the blanket over yourself like a tent. Then immediately follow with 'Simon says... stand ON the blanket again!' Watch how your child switches between these different positions. Does they differentiate between 'under' and 'on'? Does they remember what 'on' means from our first round?

    Watch for: Child differentiates between 'under' and 'on' by performing correct actions for each instruction.

  3. 3~45s

    Let's add a third concept and a challenge. Say 'Simon says... take two steps, then go OVER the blanket!' Demonstrate stepping over the edge of the blanket. Then try a two-part instruction: 'Simon says... go UNDER, then stand ON!' Watch how your child handles these more complex directions. Does they remember 'over' as a new concept? Can they follow the two-step sequence?

    Watch for: Child follows two-step directions involving spatial concepts ('under then on') correctly.
