Sing with My Tambourine

Parent and child create a simple tambourine from recycled materials and sing favorite songs together. The agent coaches the parent to observe musical memory, melodic recall, and performance skills — building cognitive memory through joyful musical play.

What you'll need

Clear workspace for crafting. Have two clean plastic bottles with lids, dried rice or beans, paper, crayons, and tape ready. Child should be alert and engaged. Room should have space for movement and singing.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start by choosing a song! Ask your child what song they would like to sing today. It could be a favorite nursery rhyme, a song from school, or even something you make up together. As your child thinks about it, watch how they responds. Does they immediately name a song? Does they hum a few notes or say a few words from a song they remembers? Tell me what you notice.

Watch for: Child recalls and vocalizes parts of familiar songs when prompted.

  2. 2~45s

Now let's make our tambourine! Help your child pour some rice or beans into one bottle, then seal it tightly. Decorate the bottle with paper and crayons — let your child lead the decorating. As you work, start singing the song your child chose. Watch how they participates. Does your child join in singing while crafting? Does they remember more of the song as you sing together? Notice if they adds rhythm with the bottle before it's even finished.

Watch for: Child sings substantial portions of a song from memory during interactive play.

  3. 3~40s

Time for our concert! With the tambourine finished, invite your child to perform the song for you. You can be the audience. Watch your child's confidence and expression. Does they sing through the whole song? Does they use the tambourine to keep rhythm? Notice if they makes eye contact, projects their voice, or adds dramatic gestures — these are all signs of performance confidence.

Watch for: Child demonstrates confidence and expression during musical performance.
